Current situation: When a test only asks for a specific kind of bugs (e.g. only visual) all types of known bugs are shown, even if they are irrelevant for the test.

This makes it harder to check the known bug list. Also the number can be unnecessary scary.

I totally agree with you. 
For example, when a cycle comes to me, I did not subscribe to this cycle, I see two types of bugs that are installed by the customer (visual and content), but in the section known bugs, the number of 200 bugs is displayed.
But I cannot open the section of known bugs, since I am not subscribed to the cycle.
Thus, I have no desire to subscribe to this cycle.
Accordingly, your proposal is a solution for the situation that I have described.

Maybe the fear that high numbers scare people off, doesn't happen as often as I thought.
